MIT Technology Review 2020 "Top Ten Global Breakthrough Technologies" I: Anti-Aging Drugs

We used to think that aging is a natural process, but age scientists believe that aging is a degenerative disease-a disease that cannot be cured but can actually be slowed down. With a deeper understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms of aging, we can delay the onset of age-related diseases so that we can stay healthy longer.

In the "Top Ten Global Breakthrough Technologies" published by MIT Technology Review in 2020, anti-aging drugs are included. Many different diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and dementia can be treated by delaying aging. The evaluation of anti-aging drugs this year shows that the global attitude towards anti-aging is more conscientious and more confident than before. Advances in science and technology provide the greatest confidence and motivation.

Anti-Aging Drugs Has Been Used Widely

Drug therapy occupies a large proportion of the anti-aging market. Senolytics is believed to be able to prevent or reverse aging by targeting cellular triggers. Rapamycin is often used as an immunosuppressant to prevent rejection in organ and bone marrow transplantation. metformin is usually used as a drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, which has possibility to help reduce the body's oxidative stress and inflammation, thereby playing an anti-aging effect.

Technology and Cell Understanding Are the Key to Unraveling the Mystery of Aging

Anti-aging drugs are used to slow down or reverse the aging process to extend its life. The aging process causes damage to macromolecules, cells, and tissues in various ways, such as genome instability, epigenetic changes, loss of protein homeostasis, mitochondrial dysfunction, and stem cell failure. As we age, the tissues of the human body will naturally degenerate and cause diseases. In the future, stem cells may regenerate dead cells or tissues. The aging drug market is still in its infancy, and people are full of doubts about its future. Advances in technology and cellular understanding are the key to unlocking the mystery of aging.

The Market Is in Its Infancy, Where Some Companies Have Fallen and Some Have Risen

In the early days, GlaxoSmithKline acquired Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, an anti-aging drug research and development company, for US$772 million, but finally announced the closure of the company in 2013. Despite such setbacks, it cannot dispel the enthusiasm of other companies in the field of anti-aging drugs.

Novartis, a large pharmaceutical company, entered the anti-aging market earlier. In 2014, Novartis began to study how to enhance the immune system of the elderly and focused its research and development on rapamycin. The results of phase 2b clinical trials of the main drug RTB101 show that it can reduce the infection rate of respiratory diseases in the elderly by 30.6%.

Celgene, another large pharmaceutical company, separated its longevity product R&D pipeline and established Celularity, focusing on anti-aging treatments of placental stem cells.

Johnson & Johnson has invested in two medical vision startups, ReVision Optics and Powervision, both of which focus on ophthalmic diseases such as age-related macular degeneration. However, ReVision Optics has already closed down in early 2018.

Samumed, a regenerative medicine company, completed a $438 million financing in August last year, bringing its valuation to $12 billion. It is developing drug therapies targeting key proteins in the WNT pathway, which help regulate tissue health, such as osteoarthritis, herniated discs, and degeneration.

Why Is the Global Anti-Aging Market So Attractive?

The anti-aging drug market is driven by factors such as the aging of the population, the influence of the media and fashion industries, and the growing demand for youth and health.

According to the WHO, in the 60 years from 2015 to 2050, the proportion of the world's aging population will increase from 12% to 22%, almost doubling. In addition, according to estimates by the WHO, by 2020, the number of people aged 60 and over will exceed children under 5, and by 2050, 80% of the elderly will live in low- and middle-income countries. With the global aging of the world intensified and the mentality of pursuing youth becoming stronger, the anti-aging market is growing stronger.

The fear of aging has given birth to a large-scale anti-aging consumer market. The global anti-aging market reached US$191.7 billion in 2019, a year-on-year increase of 8.3%; Forbes data believes that China's anti-aging market has a potential of 100 billion in the future.

Anti-Aging Market in China Is Stronger

The results of a well-known global research show that Chinese people are most afraid of getting old. The results of the report show that about 54% of people aged 45 to 54 in China feel that they are old, 28% feel depressed when they think of getting old, and 26% feel fear of getting old; compared with 32% French investigators believe that old age is over 80 years old.

On the one hand, the proportion of domestic elderly groups in the total population is increasing, and the trend of population aging is obvious. Objectively speaking, the elderly with reduced body function, low resistance, and lack of various essential elements need to rely on energy intake from the outside world. Anti-aging drugs not only offers the necessary energy for the elderly through different material forms but also delay the effect of the disease.

On the other hand, the age of the anti-aging population has shown a younger trend, which has grown steadily at a compound annual growth rate of 8%-10% in recent years. Among domestic urban women aged 20 to 24, 39% use anti-aging products, in which anti-wrinkle products have become a rigid demand.

Counterfeit product is a threat to anti-aging products, which affects the reputation of high-quality manufacturers and reduces consumer trust in the market. As product quality determines brand awareness and customer loyalty, market participants must focus on improving product quality. Besides, relevant policies are needed to maintain market order since the market is highly specialized and market polarization is relatively serious.

The anti-aging drug is just one of the ways for people to cope with the body's aging. With the advancement of technology, perfect anti-aging solutions are expected to be proposed, while human beings will never stop exploring life.
