Global Mobile AR Revenue is Expected to Reach $2 Billion in 2018

2019 will be a decisive year in the XR field, possibly becoming a year of VR.

The consumer revenue of Mobile AR is now doubling year-on-year, and the revenue is expected to reach $2 billion by the end of this year. The revenue of premise-based virtual reality (VR) entertainment will double in the next three years, reaching $854 million by 2021. By 2021, mobile AR revenue will exceed $17 billion, surpassing VR revenue for the first time.

The launch of Oculus Quest will open another important moment. It is estimated that more than one million units will be launched next year, and Oculus Quest is likely to bring VR into the mainstream. Devices like Oculus Go and Samsung Gear VR are more focused on passive media consumption, however, Oculus Quest is designed to appeal to those who are trying to experience VR games.

The revenue of VR will be doubled to $690 million because of the sales of Oculus Quest and Oculus Go. It is expected that global sales will reach nearly 2.5 million units in 2019.
