Global PETG Market Revenue is Estimated to Reach $954 Million in 2023

PETG, also known as Poly (ethylene terephthalate co-1,4-cyclohexylene terephthalate), is a kind of transparent, amorphous copolyester.

The commonly-used comonomer for PETG is 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM), which is also known as polyethylene terephthalate 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol ester. It is a product of ester exchange polymerization of three monomers, terephthalic acid (PTA), ethylene glycol (EG), and 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM), with more 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol comonomers compared to PET and more ethylene glycol comonomers compared to PCT. Therefore, the performance of PETG is significantly different from that of PET and PCT. PETG has outstanding toughness and high impact strength, with an impact strength of 3-10 times that of modified polyacrylates. It has a wide processing range, high mechanical strength, and good flexibility. In addition, PETG has higher transparency and better gloss, and is easier to print, compared to PVC.

Introduction of the Main Advantages of PETG

Advantages

Description

Outstanding hot-forming performance

It is easy to use PETG to produce products with complex shapes and high stretching ratios. In addition, compared to PC materials or acrylic, it has shorter forming cycles, lower temperatures, higher yield, and does not require pre-drying treatment before hot forming processing.

Excellent chemical resistance

PETG can withstand various chemicals and commonly-used cleaning agents.

Weather resistance

PETG has excellent weather resistance. It can maintain the toughness of the product and prevent yellowing; It contains ultraviolet absorbers that can be extruded into a protective layer to protect the board from the influence of ultraviolet rays.

Environmental protection performance

PETG substrates are all environmental-friendly materials that comply with food contact management requirements.

Economic performance

It is cheaper than PC boards and more durable than acrylic.

Easy to process

PETG can be sawn, die-cut, drilled, punched, sheared, riveted, milled, and cold bent without breaking, and slight scratches on the surface can also be eliminated with a hot air gun. It is easier to process than general acrylic, impact resistant modified acrylic, or PC board.

According to its different uses, PETG can usually be divided into three categories: extruded grade, blow-molding grade and injection grade.  According to our research data, the global PETG market revenue is expected to reach $954 million in 2023, among which the extruded grade PETG has an estimated market revenue of $370 million, which will occupy the largest share of the market, at 39.26%.

From the perspective of downstream applications, the PETG sheet market is the largest downstream application market. In 2023, the global PETG sheet market revenue is estimated to rise to $269 million, accounting for 28.20% of the market. The market sales volume of PETG sheets is expected to reach 101,500 tons, with an estimated market share of 28.45%. The PETG extruded profiles market is expected to become the second largest downstream segment with $229 million in revenue, accounting for about 23.59% of the market.
